FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How can I make a booking?
Simply use the contact form above to send us your details and the dates in which you are looking to come and we’ll get back to you with confirmation of the times and further details.
Do I need permits and licenses to fish?
Everyone needs a permit to enter the Royal Belum State Park, but we will sort all of this out for you in advance of your trip.
How do I get there?
Travelling to the Royal Belum State Park is possible by car, taxi or bus. Further details on the journey options can be found here:
https://www.royalbelum.my/eng/howtogetthere/index.html
For international visitors Penang is the closest airport and is a 2.5 hour taxi ride from there to the public jetty. We can assist in bookings. After reaching Banding Island the trip to Sungai Tiang is a one hour boat ride on the lake and a 40 minute boat ride upriver.
Could I be eaten by a tiger?
Yes. You could also be hit by a meteorite or catch a 30 pound Mahseer, and we are pretty sure those things won’t happen either. Unfortunately the tigers of Malaysia are now extremely rare and endangered and there are likely only around 150 left in the whole country. While it is not impossible that you come across one, the chances are extremely slim (we’ll still make you sign a disclaimer though…)
To put this into context, the WWF set up cameras deep in the jungle to capture the wildlife and it took them over five months to get a single photograph a tiger.
There is of course wildlife in the jungle, but the animals are not particularly interested in harming humans. But of course we take the outmost precautions to ensure your safety. You will be accompanied at all times by guides and assistants who are all very familiar with the area and will be keeping a watchful eye out for any unwanted animal encounters.
At night the campsites will be carefully watched, with motion detector alarms around the perimeters. The camp fire normally keeps the wildlife well away in any case.
What gear should I bring?
The fish you will be targeting respond well to traditional flies, so bring your usual selection of nymphs, dries and streamers. A five weight rod and line will meet most requirements.
Please note that this is a strictly catch and (Immediate) release fishery. Conserving these precious waterways and fish stocks are the whole point of the exercise, so we only allow barbless hooks and rubber nets.
Lip grippers should be avoided, but you should carry hook removal tools. Handling of the fish should be done with all due care and respect. Wet hands, holding fish horizontally in or just over the water with no more than 3 seconds of air time for the fish. Obviously no handling the fish vertically or holding gills etc
Where will I sleep?
This is wild camping in established campsites, where you will have the option of sleeping in hammocks or on camp beds.
